Black Mountain College represents one of TAC’s earliest projects. The project embodies important philosophical aims of the firm, specifically TAC’s emphasis on collaborative practice. In February 1946, TAC was commissioned to execute a site plan and design a women’s dormitory for the college. Norman Fletcher acted as principal architect on the project. Fletcher’s designs were heavily critiqued by the Black Mountain College student body, and, in the end, TAC’s plans failed to come to fruition. Nevertheless, the project stands as a reminder of the democratic, community-oriented design processes that were as much a part of Black Mountain College’s curricula as they were TAC’s design philosophy.
