Description
Robert P. Cavileer, left, stands with Samuel Cornet Collins on the upper deck of a cryostat.
Original Caption: "Dr. Samuel C. Collins, professor of mechanical engineering (right), and Dr. Robert P. Cavileer of the M.I.T. research staff complete final adjustments on what is believed to be the world's largest very-low temperature refrigerator, newly completed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Designed by Professor Collins, the new 'cryostat' will be used in fundamental research on the properties of materials at liquid helium temperatures. It will permit large-scale experimenting at lower temperatures than ever before possible."
