Thomas W. Lawson

Contact us about this vessel

Description

The Thomas W. Lawson holds several records: it was the only seven-masted schooner, the largest schooner and the largest pure sailing vessel (with no auxiliary propulsion) ever built. First worked as a collier on the U.S. East coast, then as a bulk oil carrier. Did not achieve great success, in part due to the extreme depth of hull which limited available harbors. Wrecked in a storm off Scilly Islands on December 14, 1907, killing 16 of her 18 crew plus a pilot.
