7th U.S. Navy vessel named Hornet. Ordered March 30, 1939; laid down September 25, 1939, launched December 14, 1940, sponsored by Annie Reid Knox, commissioned October 20, 1941. Launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and participated in the Battle of Midway. Sunk in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, October 27, 1942.
